"Birthday" festival update: more to come in 2010

After the premiere at Little Rock FF in May 2009, "Birthday" continued its festival run last fall at Indie Memphis, Heartland, Asheville, and Santa Fe. Thanks to all the festivals so far; more screenings are lined up for 2010!

Summer 2009 update

Spring was hopping with broadcast, web video, and DVD projects for several clients, old and new. We provided production, editorial, grading and/or scoring services for Duncan Law Firm, Nephropath, Genwealth Financial Advisors, and the "Live in Benton-Bryant" campaign—all under the able direction of Fried Green Media. Lining up for the fall, there's more commercial work and what will hopefully be a busy slate of screenings for "Birthday." And we're in early development on some new narrative and documentary work as well as a potential DVD project with the wonderful Claire Holley in 2010—all very cool. Stay tuned!

"Birthday" premiere and Claire Holley at 2009 Little Rock Film Festival

Our latest short film, "Birthday," premiered at the 2009 Little Rock Film Festival (May 13-17).

Also our video for Claire Holley's "Another Day" was a finalist in the LRFF Music Video Competition. It was great to hear Claire perform a live set at the Rev Room in Little Rock, where the winner of the competition was announced (congratulations to The Good Fear for grabbing the top prize!).

And big thanks to festival organizers Brent, Craig, Owen, and Jamie, as well as the outstanding staff and volunteers, for another great festival!

Music video for Claire Holley

In November 2008, we wrapped a new music video for LA-based indy singer/songwriter, Claire Holley! You can see the Evening Films produced music video of "Another Day" on YouTube, Vimeo, and Facebook.

FGM produces, McKinnon directs, Evening Films cuts

In September 2008, we finished editing a pair of commercial spots featuring actor Judge Reinhold ("Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Beverly Hills Cop"), directed by Academy Award winner Ray McKinnon ("The Accountant") and produced by Fried Green Media. The syndicated spots, initially created for the North Point Auto Group, are both on the video clips page.

Shooting, cutting, and scoring for Fried Green Media

More work for producer Tim Jackson of Fried Green Media: in summer 2008: in addition to the North Point spots (see above) we shot, cut, and scored another television spot for Fuller & Son. The new Fuller spot is on the video clips page along with the Fuller spot we produced for FGM in spring 2008(see below).

Music score for By the Brook

In July 2008, we completed a music score for a promotional film for the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence, produced and directed by Linda Booker of By the Brook Films.

"Ducky!" at the Little Rock Film Festival

"Give Me Ducky!" screened again in May 2008 at the 2008 Little Rock Film Festival. We had a great turn out for both screenings!

Fried Green Media brings it on

New commercial/industrial producer Fried Green Media brought three projects to Evening Films in spring 2008: check out clips from the Nephropath and Sumotext web videos on the DP reel, plus the Fuller & Son Spring 2008 commercial spot on the video clips page.

"Love Lived on Death Row" at Siskel Film Center in Chicago

North Carolina director Linda Booker's film, "Love Lived on Death Row" (which we scored in 2006—more details below) premiered in March 2007 at the Longbaugh Film Festival (Portland, Oregon) followed by additional screenings around the country last year.

"LLODR" kicked off 2008 at the Gene Siskel Film Center at the Art Institute of Chicago with two screenings that January. Additional screenings continue nationwide at festivals and special venues.

Movies and music at Indie Memphis in 2007

October 2007 took us once again to Indie Memphis' Soul of Southern Film Festival—our third visit in three years! Two films that I scored, "Love Lived on Death Row" and "Where's My Close-Up, Mr. Thornton?," screened at the festival, and I was also part of a terrific panel discussion on music in film.

Thanks to Les, Emily, and all the festival volunteers and fellow filmmakers, for a great weekend!

"Looking For Lurch"?

Currently in the works at Evening Films is documentary material that we're shooting and editing for producer/director Tim Jackson of Category One Entertainment about "Lurch," an African Watusi steer and his owner, Janice Wolf. To find out what's so remarkable about Lurch—and he really is remarkable!—check out his web site at Lurch and the Herd.

Lurch has been featured on several Japanese television programs in recent years, and in fall 2007, Evening Films and Category One shot video for Zazou Productions on behalf of Nippon Television Network for a program to air nationally in Japan late last year.

Good times at the inaugural Little Rock Film Festival

Three films with music scores that I composed screened in May 2007 at the inaugural Little Rock Film Festival: "Before," "Where's My Close-up, Mr. Thornton?," and "Love Lived on Death Row." "Before" is our very own Evening Films production, and we also edited and scored the trailers for all three films (see side bar for links).

"Where's My Close-up, Mr. Thornton?" received the festival's Best of Arkansas award—congratulations to the entire Thornton team on this award!—and special thanks to LRFF organizers Brent and Craig Renaud, Owen Brainard, and Jamie Moses for a top-notch, first-class festival. Visit the LRFF website for the wrap-up on their entire schedule—we're looking forward to next year's festival!

A visit to the Ozark Foothills Film Festival

"Give Me Ducky!" screened in 2007 at the Ozark Foothills Film Festival. I also worked camera at the festival for producer Tim Jackson of Category One Entertainment, covering the Q-and-A after the Phil Chambliss retrospective. It was great fun watching Phil's work before the Q-and-A—if you haven't heard about his unique films, check out the OFFF web site for a quick introduction.

Music video for Deas Vail

In 2007 we completed a music video for Arkansas band Deas Vail. You can check out the video on our media page. Deas Vail's debut album, "All the Houses Look the Same," produced by Mark Townsend (Relient K, dc Talk) and released by Brave New World Records, and their earlier EP "Collapse" are both available at the iTunes Music Store. This band is terrific; check them out!

Edit and score on new documentary

Late in 2006 we worked with Linda Booker, producer and director at By the Brook Films, on her latest project: "Love Lived on Death Row." This heart-rending documentary features the story of the Syriani family: in 2004, the four adult Syriani children reconciled with their father, who was on death row in North Carolina for his 1990 murder of his wife/their mother, only to face the prospect of his imminent execution in late 2005.

Linda did a great job assembling a compelling story from interviews with the Syrianis and others associated with the case. Evening Films provided additional editorial services as well as a sparse musical score for this remarkable film.

"Give Me Ducky!"

Our second short film, "Give Me Ducky!"—a two-minute tale of attack and revenge and a toy duck—screened in 2006 at Indie Memphis' Soul of Southern Film Festival. I was able to make it to the screening - nice to see Les and Emily again and meet some other talented filmmakers too. Earlier in 2006 Ducky visited the great Northwest, screening at the Port Townsend (Washington) Film Festival in September. We also had a nice screening at the T Tauri Film Festival in July. Thanks Peter, Jim, Bob and Judy!
